Invader

Pixel mosaics and space-invader icons — playful, precise street-art editions.

Invader is an anonymous French artist, born in 1969, who works in ceramic-tile mosaics based on the pixelated characters of the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders. His first mosaic was installed in Paris in 1998 (catalogued as PA_01), and he has since placed more than 4,000 mosaics in cities around the world, each one numbered and recorded as part of an ongoing “invasion.”

Alongside the street works, Invader publishes limited-edition prints. His first print, ALERT, was issued in 2001; since then the editions have been mostly screenprints, typically in editions of 50 to 100, often reworking specific invaders or video-game imagery.

The project has extended well beyond city walls: in 2015 one of his mosaics was sent to the International Space Station.
